“Individualized therapy that treats each patient holistically”

At the University Clinic for Visceral, Transplant, and Thoracic Surgery (VTT) at the Medical University of Innsbruck, a customized treatment plan is created for each patient, tailored to their specific condition, personal situation, and needs. We therefore offer a variety of surgical procedures. This is based on a broad and diverse mix of conventional and minimally invasive surgical procedures, which are performed around the clock by specialized teams under one roof. These range from simple surgical procedures for basic care, such as hernia operations, to complex operations such as hand and small intestine transplants.

Methodologically, all conventional, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic surgeries are performed. Today, cutting-edge medicine can only be achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration, in which each medical discipline contributes to success with its core competence. Within the surgical discipline, the path is marked by specialization that follows the organs (see VTT’s areas of focus). Only in this way can we offer state-of-the-art cutting-edge medicine that can be expected to provide the best benefits with the lowest possible risk. Hand in hand with patient care at the highest level are the two other pillars of a university hospital’s remit: research and teaching.

Within the surgical discipline, the path is mapped out by specialization that follows the organs (see VTT focus areas). This is the only way we can offer state-of-the-art, cutting-edge medicine that can be expected to deliver the best benefits with the lowest possible risk. Hand in hand with patient care at the highest level, the two other pillars of a university hospital’s remit are interwoven.

We have set ourselves further priorities in both research and teaching. Ischemia and reperfusion in solid organ transplantation, sepsis research (“abdominal catastrophe”), metastasis surgery in oncology, and quality management are our specified research priorities. We are particularly proud of our training center, which offers simulation capabilities for training and continuing education and represents a pioneering gateway to the future. All our employees are trained in complex learning modules with surgical procedures “on the computer,” enabling them to achieve above-average skills that they can take with them into the operating room. Highly motivated, very well-trained, and highly qualified employees in nursing and other important areas of surgical patient care complement the efforts of our physicians in their joint work with patients.

In terms of infrastructure, the VTT has 157 beds in 5 wards. All wards are equipped with state-of-the-art hotel components. The interdisciplinary ward of the VTT’s Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery is located in the Heart and Children’s Center, while the remaining wards and outpatient clinics are located in the Surgery Building (House 8, Department of Operative Medicine). The special class ward (11N) has 2-bed rooms, and 1-bed rooms are also available for an additional charge. Please inquire before admission.

The VTT houses three specialties under one roof: general and visceral surgery, thoracic surgery, and pediatric and adolescent surgery.

Each year, around 5,000 patients are treated as inpatients and over 6,400 surgical procedures are performed on just over 3,700 patients. This corresponds to 9% of all surgical procedures performed at the University Hospitals of Innsbruck. The average length of stay for inpatients is currently 5.8 days. The surgical outpatient clinic is divided into an appointment clinic and an emergency clinic with continuous opening hours and is supplemented by several specialist consultation hours that reflect the department’s areas of focus. Approximately 16,400 patients are treated on an outpatient basis and more than 2,800 patients undergo endoscopy. In addition, the pediatric surgery outpatient clinic treats almost 1,200 young patients per year.
