A warm welcome!
The research program of the University Clinic for Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery (VTT) stands for excellent, patient-oriented research at the highest scientific level. Through close integration of research, teaching and clinical care, we pursue the goal of developing innovative concepts and sustainably implementing them into clinical practice.
As a multidisciplinary team involving local, national and international collaborators, we focus on key areas in clinical and molecular oncology, transplantation and organ preservation, as well as quality assurance in surgery.
Early-career researchers and established scientists work together on pioneering projects across the entire translational spectrum to address clinically relevant questions through innovative research.
The interdisciplinary research environment and state-of-the-art infrastructure also enable us to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to improve patient care.
Together, we aim to shape the future of surgery.

Performance matrix
The VTT has 157 standardized beds distributed across five inpatient wards. All wards are equipped with state-of-the-art hotel-style amenities. The interdisciplinary ward of the Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery of the VTT is located in the Heart and Children’s Center, while the remaining wards and outpatient clinics are located in the Surgery Building (Building 8, Department of Operative Medicine). The special-class ward (11N) offers two-bed rooms, and single-bed rooms are available for an additional fee. Please inquire prior to admission.
The VTT comprises three subspecialties under one roof: general and visceral surgery, thoracic surgery, and pediatric and adolescent surgery.
Each year* approximately 5,000 patients are treated as inpatients, and more than 6,400 surgical procedures are performed on just over 3,700 patients. This corresponds to 9 percent of all surgical procedures performed at the University Hospitals of Innsbruck. The current average length of stay for inpatients is 5.8 days. The surgical outpatient clinic is divided into an appointment-based clinic and an emergency clinic with continuous opening hours and is supplemented by several specialized outpatient services that reflect the department’s areas of focus. Nearly 16,400 patients receive outpatient care, and more than 2,800 patients undergo endoscopy. In addition, the pediatric surgical outpatient clinic treats just under 1,200 young patients per year.
